This picture of a building site also captured a view of Watford town centre than can longer be seen.

The Watford Observer has again joined forces with its friends at Watford Museum to look back at structures, objects or businesses from the town’s past that have either disappeared or been relocated and this week we look back at this lost town centre view.

The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “Two things are missing from this photo. Obviously, it’s not St Mary's Church as that is still standing, but the view - which was briefly visible – can’t be seen anymore.

“I'm fairly confident it was taken in King Street, close to the High Street corner, and so the missing building must be the site of the old Woolworths (now a McDonald’s).

“1990 is a likely date as there are aerial views taken from the Harlequin Centre by the Watford Observer in June of that year.

“One shows St Mary’s tower from the same angle as well as the work in progress at the King Street corner.”
